How to Transform Your Bedroom into A Sleep Sanctuary
We all have our bedtime rituals to get a good night’s rest. And even though we try to go to bed early and stick to a bedtime routine, getting those all-important hours of rest can sometimes seem impossible, especially when we spend most of the night tossing and turning.
But could your bedroom décor be improved to create an ideal bedroom that will provide an environment for rest, positivity, and relaxation?
By making some simple changes, you’ll be able to change your sleeping environment within hours – just in time for bedtime!
Soft, muted colour palettes, warm white light, luxurious bedding, and the absence of electronics can all form part of the most intimate room in the home.
KEEP IT QUIET
Rugs can help reduce noise, especially if waking up in the middle of night – while the other is still sleeping. Plush materials like faux fur, shag, wool, silk or chenille, not only feel and look beautiful, but they can also help your move around the bedroom more comfortably. Make sure to place area rugs underneath the lower two-thirds of the bed. This is so you will have a soft area to get in and out of bed in the morning.
Although difficult in a digital age – it might be worth keeping your bedroom a no TV zone, which can often distract us late into the night. Consider fabric wall hangings and tapestries which can also aid in noise reduction.
USE BLACKOUT SHADES AND CURTAINS.
An easy designer trick to keep the room as dark (or as bright!) as you need, is the use of lining!
You can add lining to any typical Roman shade or drapery panel in blackout fabric. This simple — and often cost-effective — idea is a fool-proof way to make sure daylight doesn’t creep in too early.
USE WARM WHITE LIGHT TO GET IN THE MOOD FOR SLEEP.
When getting dressed in the morning, or for an evening out, I like to make sure there is enough light to see clearly. But during the evening hours, when I want to wind down, the light needs to be more subtle with the use of recessed lighting that softly washes the wall. Controlling the brightness in your bedroom will help you relax and set the tone for respite and sleep, helping you fall asleep easier and relax.
DIAL DOWN YOUR PALETTE
In the bedroom, busy patterns and bright tones could have an opposite effect on a peaceful evening. For an overall feeling of cocoon-like warmth, a wall treatment that is calming is key. Painting or wallpapering a room in a darker hue can help create a calming atmosphere. But don’t forget - it's also down to textures, and lighting that evokes serenity in the space, that go hand in hand.
GET RID OF CLUTTER TO REDUCE STRESS
It’s time for that annual wardrobe clear-out. Clutter is stressful and can make it difficult to switch off. Clearing out unneeded stuff simplifies everything. Being able to see and gain easy access to things that are stored in the drawers or wardrobes can reduce a huge amount stress when we’re in a rush to get ready in the morning. Using dividers or custom-built furniture, can really help get rid, or organise items we’ve been holding on to. When a bedroom is clean and clear it’s much easier to relax and enjoy your bedroom!
CHOOSE PROPER BEDDING
Buying a mattress can become costly – but can improve comfort and sleep. However, bedding can also play a big role in sleep. I love all white bedding it reminds me of a 5* hotel luxury and cleanliness. If the thought of crisp, clean white sheets makes you want to hit the bed, then it’s worthwhile. For the hot sleepers you may want to consider bedding designed to stay cool.
CREATE A SECONDARY SPACE
If you have the space, I love and would encourage creating a small seating nook that is a place of solitude just for you. It’s always a little luxury to have a separate place for reading or to simply put on a pair of shoes.
BRING IN CALMING SCENTS
It’s very relaxing to light an aromatic candle in the bedroom. You can even choose your scents by season—richer in the winter, brighter and citrusy in the summer. Whether it’s a candle, a beautiful ceramic incense holder, or a sleek stone diffuser, tranquil scents are great to bring into the bedroom for their stress- and anxiety-relieving properties.
